DENNIS ANYONE? with Dennis Hensley

Welcome to Dennis Anyone, a podcast about making things up and making things happen. I love to talk to creative types about what they do and how they do it. Hope you enjoy my conversations as much as I do. - Dennis H.

Dennis visits the Silver Lake apartment of television editor Philip Harrison who recently wrapped Season 2 of the Netflix show 13 Reasons Why and whose previous shows include Glee, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend and Mr. Robot. Philip talks about what it's like to work day after day on a show like 13 Reasons Why, where the subject matter is very intense and emotional. He also breaks down the step-by-step process of editing a television show, how he was able to break through and move from editing indie projects to major network TV shows and why he uses a special saddle chair and occasionally a mirror in his editing bay. He recalls the thrill of getting nominated for an ACE Eddie award for Mr. Robot for an episode that called on him to cut a faux 90's sitcom credit sequence. Philip also reveals the private ritual he does before showing a producer or director a new cut. He also talks about becoming a vegetarian, keeping in touch with people who might hire you, his surprise editing "audition" for Glee, working with Charles Busch on the film Die Mommy Die and being an assistant editor on American Psycho. Other topics include: his childhood obsession with Star Wars, that time he got fired, how big brothers have the best porn, the documentary he's currently making about gay historian Jonathan Ned Katz and that time he had a run in with the police.
